1U, 1½U, 2U, or 0U (Zero U) PDU are terminologies used to describe PDUs. What do these terminologies mean? This tutorial will explain why and which PDUs are described like this.
The “U” is the rack size unit “U” which is the universally accepted standard height of equipment to be mounted in a rack (or cabinet). The rack (or cabinet) is used for mounting equipment in a Data Center, Server Room, or Telecomms equipment room.
1U rack size is 1.75 inches or 4.445cm. So, a 1U PDU is a PDU that has a height of 1U or 1.75 inches and will occupy a horizontal 1U space in the rack. Ditto for the spaces occupied by the 1½U (2.625 inches tall) and 2U (3.5 inches tall) PDUs. The PDU is described, in this case, with the horizontal space it occupies in the equipment rack.
Now, what of the 0U (ZERO U)? The 0U occupies no rack size space because it is mounted vertically. All vertically mounted PDUs are described as 0U.
We will treat horizontal and vertical mounting of PDUs in another Tutorial.
