Our tutorials on PDUs continue in this tutorial with the treatment of Horizontal versus Vertical PDU.
Most items of equipment mounted in the equipment Rack or Data Cabinet are mounted horizontally. Except for PDUs that are mounted horizontally or vertically.
PDUs are mounted either horizontally or vertically depending on the length of the PDU. The length is determined by the number of ways, the accessories on it, and the type of sockets. When the PDU length is more than the standard 19” rack length, the horizontal installation is abandoned for the vertical.
For the British Standard 13A socket or the Universal socket, the maximum number of sockets that will fit on a 19″ rack is between 6 – 8 sockets (or ways), without accessories. Whereas the IEC C13 socket can accommodate 10-12 Ways, without accessories on the same 19″ Rack.
Hence, vertically mounted PDUs are referred to as Vertical PDUs as opposed to horizontally mounted PDUs.
Remember from the last tutorial (Part 7) that Vertical PDUs are also referred to as 0U (ZERO U) PDUs.
